The Anchorage Symphony Orchestra is a semi-professional symphony that has its beginnings before Alaska was even a state. The season runs from the beginning of October to the end of April, and includes about six separate programs. The orchestra frequently collaborates with theatre groups, dance troupes, and the like. Special events are aimed at children, and there are lectures and discussion groups to go along with each performance.
Every January, Anchorage hosts the
Anchorage Folk Festival, which brings together acts from throughout Alaska and the rest of the world. The artists include singers, dancers and storytellers, and the style of music ranges from bluegrass to jazz to Celtic. Concerts are free, and there is also a series of free workshops where instructors teach instrumentation and dancing.
