Moose, eagles, bears, sheep, whales, porcupines, rabbits, marmots, ravens, otters and wolves–these are just a few of the animals that live in or around Anchorage. Viewing them throughout the year is not too difficult, either, given the undeveloped wilderness and state and national parks that surround Anchorage.
Probably the most common of Anchorage residents besides its people are the more than 1,600 moose that live in the city. These large members of the deer family are seen at all times of year, sometimes in neighborhoods and downtown, usually foraging for tasty willow, and birch branches.
Never to be underestimated are the black and brown (grizzly) bears that live in the surrounding mountains and forests of Anchorage. Although they hibernate in the winter months, bears become quite active (and very hungry) in the spring, summer and fall. Learn all about Alaska bear safety at Alaska’s Department of Natural Resources website.
Anchorage also offers excellent birdwatching opportunities, most notably at Potter’s Marsh just on the south edge of the city. Anchorage.net has some more information on wildlife viewing in Anchorage, which is all part of a free Anchorage Visitor’s Guide.
