The focus of the Museum is the history of Southwest New Mexico including thematic exhibits, artifact collections, an extensive photo archive and local history research library.

The Western New Mexico University Museum (575.538.6386) is located at the top of 10th street within the WNMU campus and contains the largest permanent and most comprehensive exhibition of prehistoric Mimbres pottery and culture in the world. Also featured are pottery and basketry from other prehistoric and historic Southwest cultures, historic photographs and artifacts of the 100+-year old campus, and historic photographs of Silver City and the surrounding towns. Admission is free; group tours are available by arrangement; the hours/days are: Mon-Fri 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM and Sat-Sun 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM (closed on University holidays).
