Though famous first and foremost as a ski resort, Mammoth Lakes truly boasts year round activity and allure. From April to September, the area weather is mild, generally varying from the forties in April to the eighties of July and August. Ski season lasts well into May and sometimes into late June, and so the spring is a wonderful time to visit Mammoth for cheaper rates and less tourist congestion. Snowshoe tours and downhill or cross-country skiing is a great way to spend a spring morning, the afternoon making for softer snow and better conditions for hiking or biking.
Or, in the summer, ditch the snowshoes when hitting any of the 150 trails the mountain offers. Mountain biking and climbing, canoeing and kayaking, and fishing and swimming make for other wonderful outdoor activities in which to engage when visiting outside of the ski season.
Summer months also offer much more in the way of the arts, as August’s calendar of activities is filled with separate jazz, classical, country western, and general music festivals.
