It is not Santa Fe or Taos, but Carlsbad boasts some of the beautiful artwork and arts and crafts that have given New Mexico its fame as the center of Southwestern Art.

In downtown, visitors can stop at some of the art galleries and gift shops and know the artwork mostly created by regional artists. Some of the places you can try are: The Artists Gallery at 120 South Canyon St; Helen Gwinn gallery featuring her work in water media, collage and acrylics at 608 W. Riverside; and Old Pecos Gallery at 102 W Fox Street.

You can always go to the Carlsbad Area Art Association at 122 South Canyon Street and check the list of local artists that sell their works in their studios. This association also sponsors contests, such as the Living Desert State Park Art Show. Taking place in June, the art work entered in this show (pottery, painting, photography, sculpture) remains at the park till July. During these weeks, visitors can enjoy and buy pieces from the almost 30 exhibiting local artists that entered the contest.
