San Francisco's art scene is small but active. San Francisco Arts Monthly has lengthy listings www.SFArts.org, as does the San Francisco Chronicle's Datebook section.

One gallery building in the city is located at 49 Geary Street, just off of Union Square.  Nearly every floor of the building has a notable gallery, such as the Stephen Wirtz Gallery and the Fraenkel Gallery.

For more off the beaten track art, head to the Mission District where you will find small storefront artist run galleries and bookstores that display up and coming local artists. There is for example the Arts Complex Project Artaud and the Arts Explosion Studios.

For a list of fine Art Galleries around San Francisco you can check Art Collecting.

Finally, if you are interested in Modern Art, don’t forget to visit de San Francisco MOMA.
