Many visitors to San Francisco are traveling with a family group. It’s challenging to find a hotel that will allow more than 4 people in one room for an ‘affordable’ price.  This article lists options that are

  • family friendly with beds for 5 people
  • clean
  • near tourist attractions and/or public transit
  • in a family friendly neighborhood (safe)

Things to consider:

  • Some of these options allow 5 people of any age while some only allow 2 adults + 3 kids. Some hotels that may allow 5 adults just have two double beds and a roll-away or sofa-bed; this is very crowded for 5 adults!
  • Some hotels have adjoining rooms which they call a family suite while some have a separate bedroom and sitting area.  Some do not advertise their family suites on their website or booking engine; you may need to call directly.
  • Many hotels have smaller rooms which fire code restricts to just 4 people; even if some of your family members are very small you will not be allowed to stay in these rooms as a family of 5.  Do not try to sneak a 5th person into these smaller rooms.
  • Read the TripAdvisor reviews!   These are hotels that suit some travelers but not all travelers.  You need to do some research.
  • Before booking, confirm that your choice will fit your family comfortably, that the hotel is in a location you like, whether or not a continental breakfast is included, and that you’ve considered parking (if you have a car.)
  • The price for hotel rooms depends on season, conventions, and holidays.
  •  It may be easier for you to rent two connecting (not just adjoining, but specify connecting) rooms rather than seeking out a family room or family suite.  If you prefer this type of arrangement, consider a Hyatt, Marriott, Westin, Sheraton, the boutique Kimpton, or Joie de Vivre Hotels.
  • If you’d prefer to look for a home or apartment rental, use the Vacation Rentals tab at the left, VRBOairbnb, or other home rental website. Again do your homework!  Ask on the San Francisco forum for details about the neighborhood of any rental you’re considering.  Remember to consider the required cleaning fee.  In general, a rental can be a good value if you’re staying in San Francisco for four or more nights.
