San Francisco creates significant challenges for people in non-motorized wheelchairs and those who have to push them. Because of the steep hills and old streets full of cracks and narrow sidewalks, getting around can be difficult. Even motorized wheelchairs are challenged with the steep hills. Plan ahead to locate accessible sites in areas where you won't have to climb the hills. Take accessible cabs to difficult to reach places instead of trying to walk or navigate the steep hills.
California laws are fairly supportive of the handicapped, so most facilities are accessible, but check ahead for ADA compliance. Even Government buildings and Universities are slow to comply, as was recently found out in a successful ADA lawsuit filed against one western state University. So it is important to do your research in advance.
