There are many opportunities available all year round for exploring the vibrant culture of Lahaina. In February, the people of Lahaina celebrate the Chinese New Year with a street festival on Front Street. In March, the annual Ocean Arts Festival is held in honor of the migration of Pacific Humpback whales, and in April, the town throws a birthday party for its landmark Banyan Tree, which is at the center of the celebration again in December with the Holiday Lighting of the Banyan Tree.
Those visiting Lahaina in June can observe the Na Kamehameha Parade, held in honor of King Kamehameha who once ruled over the islands. The parade is highlighted by riders on horseback bearing flowers that represent the eight major islands.
For more information about these and other cultural activities, check out the Lahaina Town Events Calendar.
The International Festival of Canoes is another unique Lahaina tradition, which brings master canoe carvers from all over Hawaii and the Pacific come together for two weeks to create handcrafted canoes. The festival also features other craftsmen that demonstrate things such as thatching and drum making.
Organizations like Friends of Moku`ula and Maui Nei also provide information about Lahaina history and culture, and offer a variety of cultural activities and walking tours for visitors.
