Staunton, Virginia, is a good beginning place for day trips or further adventures in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, with Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway in its vicinity. Yet it also holds its own as an attractive destination for tourists and history buffs. Skyline Drive is one of Virginia's Scenic Byways and takes you through Shenandoah National Park. Blue Ridge Parkway is a beautiful drive through the Blue Ridge Mountains. Both roads are only a short drive from Staunton.

Staunton has the usual taxi and car rental services for getting you around town, but the best news there is the FREE Trolley Service, for use by residents and visitors alike. With three distinct routes - the Green Route, the Silver Route, and the Red Route - no destination in Staunton is left uncovered by the trolley, whether its downtown's shopping and eateries, or family attractions. Though the trolley has  designated stops, you can hail it from about anywhere along one of its routes, which it traverses every 20 to 30 minutes. For a tour of Staunton, board the trolley at the Staunton Visitor's Center on 35 S. New Street and take the loop, about 30 minutes in duration. The trolley runs from 10 am to 10 pm, Monday through Saturday, but does not run on Sundays. Can't have everything...
