There is a car hire location in Roanoke Regional Airport with the companies Avis (tel: (540) 366-2436), Budget (tel: (540) 265-7328), Enterprise (tel: (540) 563-8055), Hertz (tel: (540) 366-3421) and National/Alamo (tel: (540) 563-5050) represented. Enterprise also has a few downtown locations if you decide after arriving that you want to get a car (offices are at 1603 Williamson Road and 3507 Franklin Road). You may also reserve a taxi for travel within town by calling Liberty Cab (tel: (540) 344-1776) or Yellow Cab (tel: (540) 345-7711).

The Valley Metro bus system offers bus services within the city and to a few surrounding areas, including the closeby city of Blacksburg and the major regional university there, Virginia Tech. However, the buses typically run only once an hour between 6am and 8pm Mondays through Saturdays, with almost all buses stopping at the Campbell Courthouse, which is also the Greyhound bus station. This form of transportation is only recommended for fairly lengthy travel, as fare are $1.25 and the schedules are not very convenient for tourists.

That being said, downtown Roanoke is not very large and can be easily explored by foot. The major scenic Blue Ridge Mountain attractions (including vista points, hiking grounds, and so forth), however, will require a car.
