Montpelier, Vermont is America's smallest state capitol by both population and physical size. The city was chartered in August 1871 by Colonel Jacob Davis who is thought to have named the city after the French city of Montpellier in gratitude for the help of the French during the American Revolution. In 1805 Montpelier became the capitol of Vermont due to its central location in the state, ending years of squabble among other Vermont cities vying for the honor.
Today Montpelier has a vibrant downtown and is home to 8035 permanent residents (2000 Census). Norwich University and The New England Culinary Institute are also located in the city.
