Davis County (map) borders Salt Lake County to the south, and Weber County (Ogden) to the north. The western border is the Great Salt Lake, and the eastern border is the Wasatch mountain range. The county's southern hotels are only 20 minutes from Salt Lake Airport - and those in the Layton area are only 30 minutes away.
Summer provides activities like the exploration of Antelope Island State Park. The park is on the largest island in the Great Salt Lake - and there's plenty to do, from playing on the beach (and washing off in fresh water showers), biking, hiking and riding horses from Fielding Garr Ranch. Over 600 bison (American Buffalo) roam the island, hundreds of pronghorn (antelope), coyote and other mammals. The island also serves as a nursery herd for Bighorn Sheep, which are "raised" here, then taken to other parts of the state to mix the gene pool and increase herds. There are also dozens of mule deer and other animals on the island.
Summer also provides amusement at Lagoon - the largest park in the intermountain west - with over 50 rides and a complete water park. Other family activities can be found at Cherry Hill, Boondocks and other family-oriented activities. There are ten public golf courses in the area, and some of the best in the state - with beautiful views, challenging links, and reasonable rates.
Winter sports are also popular. Davis hotels are good lodging choices for skiers and borders: Snowbasin (a sister to Idaho's Sun Valley resort, and the site of several 2002 winter Olympic events) is literally 20 mins from Layton hotels, and the uncrowded slopes of Powder Mountain are only a half hour drive. The southern hotels put the recreational skier in nationally-branded hotel properties, at great rates - and right in the middle of the northern resorts, and those of the Wasatch Range (including Alta, Snowbird, Solitude and Brighton - each about 30 mins away). Most hotels offer ski packages for all area resorts.
If you're hungry - there are over 250 restaurants in Davis County, from every fast food brand known to the traveler, as well as local favorites such as The Mandarin, Roosters Brew Pub and Corbin's Grille - as well as many others.
