If you want to watch a game, the Texas Tech Red Raiders compete in Big 12 baseball, football, and both men’s and women’s basketball. And the Lubbock Cotton Kings, a Central Hockey League team, play numerous homes games at Lubbock Municipal Coliseum from October through March.

If you’re rather play than watch, head to Mackenzie Park. The 250-acre recreation area offers an 18-hole public golf course, a 21-hole Frisbee golf course, trails for walking, jogging, and horseback riding, as well as Prairie Dog Town, one of the country’s last remaining active prairie dog colonies. Golfers have other options as well. Lubbock has several public 18-hole courses, including Shadow Hills on 3rd Street and Elm Gove on Milwaukee Street , both of which can be played with or without a cart.

If you have your own boat, you can use the two boat ramps at Buffalo Springs Lake , although rentals are not available. This is also a good spot for mountain biking. Hikers should check out the four-miles of trails around Lubbock Lake Landmark, in addition to the trails within Mackenzie Park. And swimming is available at Lubbock ’s four municipal outdoor pools, which are open from late May through early August. They are Clapp Municipal Swimming Pool on Avenue U, Mae Simmons on Weber Drive , Maxey on 30th Street , and Rogers on Bates Street . For year-round swimming, head to the indoor pool at the YWCA on 35th Street or the two swimming beaches at Buffalo Springs Lake .
