The Dallas Zoo is undergoing an historic transformation. As the largest and longest established zoo in the Southwest, founded in 1888, the Dallas Zoo is taking big steps towards becoming one of the best Zoos in the country. Since 2005, the Zoo has opened more than 14 new or renovated exhibits, including Bug U!, Tamarin Treetops, Otter Outpost, renovated Gorilla Conservation Research Center, Galápagos and Aldabra tortoises habitats, African penguins and much more! In 2009, two new exhibits opened: Ghosts from the Bayou (featuring white alligators) and the return of Butterflies. In 2010, the Dallas Zoo will introduce a major new addition, The Savanna. This expansive habitat will provide a new home for elephants, giraffes, lions, zebras, hoof stock, warthogs, and others. Many of the animals will roam free, together, creating a real safari-like experience. The new habitat will replace some of the oldest and most aging exhibits in the Zoo. The Children's Zoo is a favorite with all kids, especially the running stream where they can play. There is a lot of beautiful paths with huge trees for humans to walk while experiencing animals and nature. The Dallas Zoo is a must-see destination for anyone that enjoys nature!
