The Deep Ellum (short for "Deep Elm Street) area of Dallas, was jumping with nightlife in 2004 and before, but because the city has changed their zoning restrictions and many locations did not conform, things have changed. The number of bars and nightclubs has shrunk from over 60 to approximately 16.
In the daytime, however, there are still tons of shops and parlors and great lunch restaurants to visit.
Twisted Root - a burger place created from three executive chefs tired of working the hotel corporate banquet route.
Deep Sushi - really good sushi for lunch or dinner, and they have a Happy Hour Monday-Thursday 5-7pm, so you can also hook up with your friends after work.
You may not want to go into the area at night, especially if you're alone.
This area has reciently colapsed as a fun and safe place to visit, shop and just have a good time. Although it is about to go through an massive change for the better, it is, in many opinions, not a good place to go at this time. If you are visiting from out of town, it is advised to find other place to hang out.
