If you’re looking to explore the region a bit on your own, then a rental car is probably the best option. A valid US driver’s license is necessary for American visitors, and drivers do typically need to be 21-years of age or older. The roads around Sioux Falls are well maintained, but you should be sure to inquire about construction and other detours, especially during the peak tourist season. Watch for wildlife, especially in the more remote parts, as they’ll certainly expect the right of way. South Dakota does require all drivers to carry auto liability insurance, and all motorists must use seat belts.

Rental cars are available at the Sioux Falls Regional Airport in the baggage claim area, and also from other locations throughout the city. Most of the major US agencies including Avis, Alamo, National, Hertz and Budget are available, and there are also specialty services including local agencies where you can rent a van or other larger vehicles, should your needs call for it.

For that special event there are also several large limousine companies that offer a range of cars in the area including stretch limos and other specialty vehicles. Of course taxis are also available at the Sioux Falls airport as well as at many of other destinations throughout the city.
