About an hour south of Myrtle Beach and north of Charleston off of Route 17  is the Francis Marion National Forest.  The forest was named for Revolutionary War hero Francis Marion, the "Swamp Fox", and offers camping, rifle ranges, boat launches, hiking, and mountain biking.  There are multiple trailheads, with hiking opportunities through pine forests, along the intercoastal waterway, and swamp/marshlands.  The Palmetto trail which traverses most of the state of South Carolina is also accessible from Francis Marion.
