Beaufort is an architect’s dream destination—especially if you are drawn to Colonial or plantation constructions. Home and plantation tours are available during certain times of the year; during March, St Helena ’s Episcopal Church offers plantation and Colonial home tours during their Spring Tours event. During the autumn, the Historic Beaufort Foundation sponsors the Beaufort Fall Festival of Homes and History. If you aren’t lucky enough to be in town during one of these events, you still have the option of touring one of the several historic homes open to the public as a museum, or you can create your own tour to explore the city’s historic buildings on your own time. The Historic Beaufort Foundation, founded in 1967, was formed for the “preservation of historic houses, buildings and sites of Beaufort.” The foundation provides a number of publications, including guidebooks and maps that will help you in your quest to view the town’s historic buildings.
