During the summer, head to Put-in-Bay, Ohio for a day vacation. First stop, the ferry dock, the kids get excited about riding the boat across the "big lake" (Lake Erie) -  feel the  tension roll away once the ferry pulls away from the dock. Explore the island on golf carts (rent them near the ferry dock). See the coupons on the Miller Ferry website, for $5 off the golf cart rental, save on meals, tours, bikes. The Miller Ferry runs the most often, and parking is free near the ferry dock at Catawba. Have your driver drop you and family off at the dock, then buy the tickets while your driver parks. Kids under 5 ride free, even pet dogs ride aboard at no charge. Some of the "free" or low cost sites include the Perry's Memorial, parks, nature trails. The Rangers at the Memorial give dramatic talks and artillary firing demonstrations. Free fishing poles and bait are loaned to the kids at the Aquatic Center, they can drop a line right off the dock. Ask for directions to a small park on the west side of Put-in-Bay, you can peek thru the woods at the "ship home" , a freighter bow turned into a house. Bring along beach shoes in case you decide to do some wading or swimming at the State Park beach (rocks).
