Look for these books before you travel to the Pantanal:

  • Brazil: Amazon And Pantanal (Travellers' Wildlife Guides) by David L. Pearson. This is an excellent introduction to the region. Not always complete, but has good art of birds, mammals etc.

  • Pantanal: South America's Wetland Jewel by Russell A. Mittermeier and Theo Allofs. Probably the most beautiful photo book on the Pantanal. Shows the scenic region of the southern Pantanal and it's pristine Rio Negro.

  • Frommer's Guide Brazil 2007 by Shawn Blore. Up-to-date information.

  • Birds of Southern South America and Antarctica. This book covers about 90% of the species found in the southern Pantanal, and is a must if you're interested on birds.

  • Neotropical Rainforest Mammals: A Field Guide by Louise H. Emmons. This handy guide covers about 95% of the mammals you will see in the Pantanal and gives some very detailed information about them.

All these books can be found in good bookstores.
