The Zoo is probably the best place to take the kids if you are visiting Watertown.  Thompson Park and the Zoo there are very special.  From the many "pull-offs" on the road there you can see all across Watertown and also see the lake on a clear day.  If you go in the winter months, you can go to a basketball game at the local high school, or just sight-see along the Black River.  There is a great music store in the Square and also not one bad place to eat anywhere in town!  Remember to get yourself some cheese curd and Crogan bologna before you leave town!  Get as much as you can because you won't find anything like this bologna anywhere but in this area of New York.  It is made nearby and the taste is to die for.  In the summer months, there are the street vendors on Wednesdays where all sorts of homemade foods and art are sold.  If you hit it right, you will find the best sweetcorn being sold there and a few little tables selling homemade incense and fragrant oils.   If you are a Veteran, there is also a V.A. Outpatient Clinic there in case you should have a problem.  Go, stay, meet the people.  You will be treated as family!  Hit the Office Bar if you want and get some good eats and chili.  Just go there!  Also Ft. Drum is located there.  Everything is a nice short drive if you stay in town.  Go to Natural Bridge on Rt. 3 for ice cream in the summer!
