Oia is a very pleasant city in which to walk around and wander among the whitewashed housed and blue-domed roofs. Find a cafe that offers a pleasant view of the neighboring islands and water and park yourself there for a couple hours. This is especially enjoyable at sunset, when the show can be spectacular. Oia is pretty quiet, but there are some taverns to repair to.

Since the town is somewhat of a haven to artists, there are plenty of art galleries. It is worthwhile to spend a little time walking around and looking at all the different works of art for sale.

Nautical Museum

This building is an old mansion that has been converted to the region's Maritime Museum. It showcases the region's contributions to the rich Greek naval tradition. On display are rare figureheads, seamen's chests, old maritime equipment, drawings, models of old and new Thiran ships, aquarelles featuring old sailing vessels as well as rare photographs and a library. Visitors have said that it is not the best museum on the island, and that it can be a little difficult for English speakers, as explanations in English are not usually provided.

A small harbor is attached to the town. It is possible to take a boat to the nearby island of Thirassia. Near the harbor is also where you will find the beach.

AMMOUDI Bay is located directly below the tip of Oia. This small port is the perfect place to spend a lazy afternoon at one of the seaside tavernas or to come for the sunset. There is swimming at the tip of the bay with wonderful views to the volcano while plunging into th clear Aegean sea. Take care that there isn't a beach but the rocks are body forming and perfect for keeping alert to take in the views.
