Montauk is an excellent choice for families looking to vacation in the Hamptons, but desire a kid-friendly, casual atmosphere, something normally hard to find. Montauk is filled with enagaging outdoor and indoor activities for families, ranging from watersports, to camping, to more educational pursuits. Families looking for a beach should note that there are several in Montauk, each no more than a mile away from the center of town, however, locals and visitors alike know that Gin Beach, located on the sound, is ideal for children as the waves are mild and the rocks sparse. Watersports abound, and chartering a boat for the day to take the kids fishing can be a memorable experience. For city-dwelling families with older children, renting bicycles and touring the charming roads, lined by rolling dunes and sandy beaches, is a rare afternoon treat. Younger children will enjoy the local petting zoo on West Lake Drive, with animals to feed and pony rides for the more adventurous little ones. For a rather retro twist, reminiscent of the Catskills, Fort Pond boasts a facility with mini-golf, paddle boats, and the like. Teenagers can split from the parents for a few hours and visit the local bowling alley on Route 27 for, you guessed it, bowling, and other pastimes like arcade games, air hockey, etc. Families looking for a truly outdoor experience can visit one of six state parks for camping, hiking, tennis, and swimming. Finally, parents wanting to insert a little education into the trip can visit the public library to check out the historical archives or bring the children to the famous Montauk Point Lighthouse on the Montauk Highway, and of course, make a stop at the gift shop.
