Tucumcari Mountain Cheese Factory, situated in Tucumcari, New Mexico, was the inspiration of its founder Charles Krause who I had the pleasure of meeting one afternoon at the plant.  It's a great little place that if you call ahead with a group will arrange a tour of the factory.  It has a small storefront where you can buy product for the road (part of the over 10,000 lbs produced a week. )  .his feta cheese took national second and now he does almost 10% of the national sales for this product.  His Organic Native Cheese lines are particularly sought after with Asiago, Green Chile Cheddar and of course the Feta getting rave reviews.

Tucumcari Mountain began production in December  1995.

Krause, a 4th generation cheese maker with 40 years experience in Wisconsin, saw the booming growth of the dairy industry in New Mexico, and built his plant at the crossroads of I-40 and US Hwy. 54.

823 East Main Street...if it looks deserted go out back....Krause is probably making something good.  The only thing that would be a great complement to his over the counter sales would be a bakery/coffee shop next door serving organic coffee and locally grown organic meat and produce.
