In 1865, Nelson Green located here in Grant Township. When the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad took a right-of-way across his land, they named the depot Greenwood Station. It was given a post office as Malta on January 19, 1876, with Clark S. Parks as its first postmaster, there being at the time another Greenwood post office in Michigan. The office was closed on August 27, 1877, but was restored as Rothbury on September 22, 1879, with Charles D. Arnold as postmaster, and the village took the same name.
