Flying into the area around Mackinaw City is not all that easy, and so a trip to Ann Arbor or Detroit may be preferable.  That said, the closest airport would be the Pellston Regional of Emmet County , located fourteen miles to the south of Mackinaw City in Pellston.  Another option would be the Chippewa County International Airport , which has runways frequently serviced by Northwest Airlines.  Chippewa is located about fifty miles north in Sault Ste. Marie, MI.  The Alpena County Regional Airport is a final local option, headquartered 75 or so miles away in—you guessed it— Alpena .

Getting from these airports into Mackinaw City should not, however, present much of a difficulty.  The taxi company relied on throughout all of Northern Michigan is Top of the Hill Taxi, and common rental car corporations like Avis allow for more personal transportation.

Driving into the city is all M-119 or U.S.-31, but please remember that Mackinac Island does not permit the use of cars on its lands, a restriction that is part of its efforts to keep its parks as pristine as possible.
