There are a number of interesting tours in the Vineyard Haven area that are worth going on. Many of them depart from Oak Bluffs, the other main port on Martha’s Vineyard, or Edgartown, which has an airfield. Try the African-American Heritage Trail of Martha’s Vineyard (508-693-4361), the Martha’s Vineyard Glider Rides at Katama Airfield in Edgartown (508-627-3833), or the Vineyard History Tours (508-627-8619).

There are a number of beautiful beaches on Martha’s Vineyard, but not all of them are close to Vineyard Haven. A few of the closer ones are the Lake Tashmoo Town Beach on Herring Creek Road, Tisbury Town Beach on Owen Little Way, and Eastville Beach, located between Oak Bluffs and Vineyard Haven.

For a museum on the history of the island, you’ll have to venture into Edgartown, where the Martha’s Vineyard Museum features a collection of exhibits that document the presence of Wampanoag and American peoples on the island. The museum, located on 59 School Street, is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10am to 5pm during the summer. Hours are reduced during the spring and fall, and the museum only opens on Saturdays between January and early March.
