Touring horse country is what the Lexington region is about. The Blue Grass Tours (859-252-5744) have one daily tour at 9am from April through October. This includes a stop a local horse farm, the Keeneland Race Course, Man o War’s gravesite and other points of interest. Reservations required.
There are daily tours from Horse Farm Tours (859-268-2906) at 9am and 1pm, and this include a drive through historic downtown Lexington, plus visits to two farms and Keeneland and Thoroughbred Park.
When you’re done horsing around, hit the court at the University of Kentucky Basketball Museum, located in the Lexington Center Complex. Visitors can take on former All-American college players on a “virtual court” and compare their abilities with Wildcat players.
The Lexington Children’s Museum, also known as the Explorium of Lexington and located in Victorian Square, offers seven galleries with more than 100 hands-on activities ranging from “walking on the moon” to dancing a tune on a giant piano. The museum even has a special play area for toddlers. It is open year-round, but closed on Mondays. 859-258-3256.
Lexington has plenty of covered bridges to visit, and these are covered to protect the wood from the elements, but imagine a bridge made by the elements. Take a ride to see the limestone bridges in Natural Bridge State Park and the Red River Gorge area north of Lexington. These fascinating rock formations are breathtaking, and the area is popular for hiking.
