St. Augustine visitors who are interested in music, culture and the arts have several options to choose from in the area. A popular place where visitors can see what is going on in the area is the Limelight Theatre ( http://www.limelight-theatre.org/) Visitors can get information about seeing Off Broadway plays, musical theater performances, comedy acts, and even the ballet through this one organization.
The St. Augustine Amphitheatre ( www.staugamphitheatre.com) is another wonderful location to catch a show. The venue was the home of the Florida state play, The Cross & Sword from 1965 to 1996. The St. Augustine Amphitheatre recently underwent a major renovation and expansion. The new outdoor venue has 2,500 permanent seats covered by a canopy, 1000 bleacher seats uncovered, and room for another 1000 flex seating. Located right next door Anastasia State Park, the facility is accessible to camping, nature trails, & the beach. The Amphitheatre is home to such events as Night Owl Cinema, a free family movie series every two weeks projected on the venue's giant movie screen & The Gamble Rogers Music Festival.
Cafe 11 at the Beach (www.originalcafe11.com) hosts some great from differing genres (in 2003 Modest Mouse played there twice before they hit the big time). They also do a very good Sunday Brunch ($9.95)
Visitors who are interested in the opera are in luck, because Saint Augustine is home to a repertory opera company. The First Coast Opera ( http://www.firstcoastopera.com/) offers outstanding performances at relatively low prices. As a town which caters to tourists, dress for performing arts events in St. Augustine are more casual than in other parts of the country.
In addition to the performing arts options available in St. Augustine, visitors should consider spending an evening in nearby Jacksonville where the performing arts options are many varied. The Time-Union Center for the Performing Arts in Jacksonville is a favorite of many St. Augustine visitors. More information about the performing arts options available in the Jacksonville area can be found online at http://www.tripadvisor.com/Travel-g60... .
For something that only a local would know about Pretty Cool Music/A Backyard Production, hosts musicians at a local large backyard where a suggested donation goes directly to the musician(s) and everyone brings a dish, potluck style, and whatever you want to drink. its a really mellow vibe. For instance Saturday the 29th there will be Bill Wharton, 'the Sauce Boss''', who cooks up a huge pot of gumbo as he plays (sauceboss.com) some mean slide guitar.
