St. Augustine itself is a very walkable city, however if you are looking to go to the beach and farther afield, there are limited options.  The Sunshine Bus is a local area shuttle which will take passengers around town for $1.  http://www.sunshinebus.net  Click on the system map to figure out which line you need, then from the main page click on the color of the line to get the schedule.  They don't run on Sundays.  The Old Town trolley in addition to running a trolley tour in town, has a beach bus which will take you out the the sights on the island (alligator farm, Lighthouse, beaches) for free if you've purchased the 3-day trolley pass.

Rental cars are the way to go for visitors trying to figure out what the best mode of transportation is for getting around Saint Augustine, however parking in the old city can be problematic or expensive ($10 per day).  Most travelers who visit Saint Augustine fly in to Jacksonville International Airport ( http://www.jaa.aero/) which is where they rent their cars.  The entry level of the airport, is home to a number of nationally recognized car rental agencies including, Avis/Budget ( www.avis.com).

Travelers who have reached St. Augustine via some other method and need to rent a car upon arrival in the area can rent a car at the St. Augustine airport, however they are the furthest away from town.   The Avis/ Budget car rental is now located at 340 S.R. 16 Saint Augustine about 10 minutes from downtown and 3 min from the Airport (904-825-2764).

Taxi service is an option both to and from the airport and within the city.   However, the distance between the Jacksonville airport and the city itself is great enough that taxi service is expensive, about $80 and up.

Two shuttle companies that will take you to or from the airport starting from around $60 plus a variable fuel charge plus a customary tip, are www.islandairportshuttle.com  or http://www.airportexpresspickup.com .  Shuttle service is usually only available during the day, and they will drop you off at various locations  in town.  They do offer 24 hour door to door service, usually for about $20 more. They will also drop you at Avis/Budget North for a small fee.

Another shuttle service for airport transportation is Airport Shuttle of St. Augustine. www.AirportShuttleStAugustine.com or (904) 825-0004. Rates for 2011 range from $49.00 to $65.00 depending on the type of service.

Within Saint Augustine, cabs are a more viable option.   Travelers can choose from a number of well-known taxi companies (including Checker Cab, Yellow Cab and St. Augustine "Rides") as well as from other local cab options such as Comfort Cab and Ancient City Cab).    Travelers should check with their local hotel staff to get the best updated information on cabs in the area. For a premier drive service and airport transportation  there is another new company that uses late model Lincoln Town Cars for about the same cost as other taxis.. "Rides Towncar and Taxi".904-392-0294  In all, there are plenty of choices for all  your safe transportation needs.
