There is no shortage of live, cultural entertainment in Wilmington. At the Grand Opera House on Market Street, which was built in 1871 and accommodates more than 1,100 people, the First State Ballet Theater presents a variety of classical and contemporary ballet performances. The Grand Opera House is also home to the Delaware Symphony Orchestra, which offers chamber concerts and special events, as well as OperaDelaware, a nationally recognized regional company that provides spectacular productions with full orchestra, family opera theater, and lectures. At the DuPont Theater, patrons can choose from professional Broadway series, acclaimed children’s series, and other special presentations. An annual production of the Nutcracker is also presented, complete with live orchestra, by Academy of the Dance, a professional training school of classical ballet. On Water Street, the Delaware Theatre Company offers bold, contemporary plays and new approaches to the classics. For dinner theater, the Three Little Bakers puts on Broadway musicals, country stars, big bands, and Christian concerts. Visitors will find family hospitality in a 980-seat theater with tiered seating, buffet-style dinners and delicious desserts. Finally, at the local high school, the Dickinson Theater Organ Society presents outstanding concerts on the mighty Kimball theater pipe organ—the fourth-largest theater organ in the world.
