If you are interested in learning about the history of Rehoboth Beach, a visit to the Anna Hazzard Museum is a must. This museum, maintained by the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society, is located on Christian Street in an original 1890's "tent house" of the type that were common in the area during the town's days as a religious revival center, near the turn of the 20th Century.
Rehoboth Beach was, in fact, founded as a religious center in the 1870's, as seaside Christian resort where people could come for a "rest cure", something that was very much in fashion at the time. Many Christians purchased lots in the town and attended religious meetings during the summer months. The Anna Hazzard Museum houses hundred of artifacts and photos chronicling the town's history.
The Rehoboth Beach Historical Society is also in the process of building a new museum, located in the town's historical ice house, The Rehoboth Beach Museum, which will make it possible to expand the archives at the Anna Hazzard House and to increase their holdings. See their website for more details on when the museum will be open.
