Airports: Middletown is served by numerous airports that serve the Greater Hartford-Springfield area and the Greater New Haven area. In Windsor Locks, CT is Bradley International Airport which is the largest airport in Connecticut and serves as a major hub for much of Connecticut and Western Massachusetts. The airport is north of Hartford between Hartford & Springfield and is 27 miles from Middletown. Tweed New Haven Airport is an up and coming airport that serves the Greater New Haven area. The airport is located in East Haven and is 25 miles from Middletown. There is also Brainard Field in Hartford which is 15 miles away plus smaller airports in East Haddam and Plainville
Driving to Middletown: Route 9 runs along the Connecticut River and through Downtown Middletown which allows easy highway access to the downtown area including Wesleyan University. On the western edge of the city is I-91 which is a major interstate highway that runs from New Haven up to Canada. Route 66 connects I-91 with Downtown Middletown and then continues over the CT River into eastern Connecticut. Route 9 runs from its start off of I-95 (Exit 69) in Old Saybrook, CT and continues north through Middletown till it ends and intersects with I-84 in Farmington, CT just west of Hartford. I-91 starts off of I-95 in New Haven, CT and continues through the western edge of Middletown and then into Hartford where it intersects with I-84 (East/West highway that runs from New York to Sturbridge, MA where it ends at I-90/Mass Pike)
Bus Services: The Middletown Transit District provides bus service for the City of Middletown as well as the Greater Middletown area which includes the communities of Portland, East Haddam, East Hampton, Durham, Middlefield and Cromwell. Middletown Transit has also become the host to Peter Pan Bus Lines which have bus routes throughout the eastern seaboard as well as connections to the 48 contiguos states. Peter Pan makes trips 3 times a day to New York City from Middletown, 2 times a day to Hartford and 2 times a day to Boston. CT Transit also provides daily bus service to Hartford during the work week from Main Street Middletown.
Trains: There are nearby AMTRAK train stations in Meriden & Hartford. AMTRAK provides service to New York City 6 times a day from Meriden, CT (Just south of Middletown). From Hartford AMTRAK offers service once a day to Boston from Union Station in Downtown Hartford. From New Haven Amtrak offers service 6 times a day to Boston and MetroNorth offers service twice an hour to Grand Central Station in New York City from Union Station in Downtown New Haven. MetroNorth is the major commuter rail line used by commuters and tourists for southeastern Connecticut.
ANNUAL EVENTS IN MIDDLETOWN
Cruise Night on Main: On the second Thursday evening of every June hundreds of classic hot rods, antique and muscle cars make their way to Main Street and the green. All the cars are lined up to show off while there is 50's & 60's music, refreshments, entertainment, and an array of restaurants and nightclubs open for dinner. New now is the parade of cars at the end of the evening after the top cars have been chosen
Head of the Connecticut Regatta: More then 500 boats and 3000 participants make there way to Harbor Park in Middletown every October making the Head of the CT one of the largest regattas in the country with participants of all ages from all over the world.
ARCHITECTURE
Main Street Middletown: Main Street is home to an array of new and old buildings. There are numerous old buildings that line Main Street some of which are historic as well as some beautiful churches
Wesleyan University: Like Main Street Wesleyan is comprised of new and old buildings. Walking around the campus threre are some amazing old homes that are now classrooms, offices or dorms for students and faculty at the university
Arrigoni Bridge: The Arrigoni Bridge crosses the Connecticut River and connects Middletown with Portland. When the bridge openrd in 1938 it was the longest bridge in New England and today more then 34,000 people cross it daily.
NIGHTLIFE: Although Middletown is not a major city with as many nightclubs and bars as Hartford or New Haven there still are a number of establishments thanks to loyal members of the community and of Wesleyan University.
