The major airport that serves the Hartford, CT and Springfield, MA area is Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks, CT (about 20 minutes north of Hartford) Bradley is right off of I-91 which also runs through downtown Hartford which is very convenient. At Bradley there are numerous on site rental car agencies, cab agenies and limousine services that run from the airport. If you would like to use public transportation Connecticut Transit provides buses from the airport into downtown Hartford. The 30X or 30N will take you from downtown to and from the airport. At $1.25 it is a real bargain, and because it used the HOV lanes on the highway into town can also save you considerable time. It can be a bit challenging to get a cab on the street downtown, but there are several taxi services in town.
Driving to Hartford from the north (Canada, Northern New England): I-91 is the easiest route as I-91 runs from upstate Vermont all the way to Hartford and in downtown Hartford intersects with I-84.
Driving to Hartford from the Northwest (Upstate New York, Western Mass): There are two routes: The Mass-Pike/I-90 can be picked up in Western Mass and then by Springfield drivers can pick up I-91S which will bring you into downtown Hartford. If youare closer to northwestern Connecticut you can pick up Route 44 which runs through Torrington, Canton, Simsbury, Avon, West Hartford and finally into downtown Hartford.
Drivers from the Southwest (New York City area): There are 3 routes: I-84 can be picked up north of New York City which will eventually lead you into downtown Hartford. The Merritt Parkway can be picked up in southwestern CT and runs parallel to I-95 (No trucks) and then connects with I-91 which will lead you into downtown Hartford or if you stay on it the road becomes the Berlin Turnpike and will lead you to downtown Hartford (Best bet is to take I-91). I-95 can be picked up and then in New Haven drivers should pick up I-91N and that will lead into downtown Hartford
Drivers from the Northeast (Worcester, Boston): Drivers can pick up I-90/Mass-Pike and take that to I-84 which will lead you into downtown Hartford
Drivers from the Southeast/East (Providence, Southeastern CT, Southern RI): Drivers can pick up I-95 to I-395 in southeastern CT where they can pick up Route 2 which will take them to East Hartford, CT where the road intersects with I-84 which will bring them over the Bulkley Bridge into downtown( BEST ROUTE). Drivers can also take I-95 to Route 9 in south-central CT to I-91 in Rocky Hill, CT or continue on Rt. 9 to Farmington, CT and pick up I-84E into downtown Hartford
Arriving by Bus or Train: Union Station is located in downtown Hartford serves as the main Bus and Train station for Hartford. At Union Station there is an adjacent 200 space parking lot. Union Station is served by Amtrak, Bonanza Bus, Connecticut Limo, CTTranist, Greyhound and Peter Pan Bus
