In 2004, the Town of Vail decided to begin renovation on Vail Villag . Since then, work has been on-going to update the area to depict an upscale and romantic looking ski resort town.

The central area of Vail Village is called “Vail Square.” This area is just over 2 acres large and is in the process of being converted into a place that looks like a pedestrian village. The architects and planners who have been working on the new design have called the new look, “European-inspired.” And they have a goal of making the two areas in the heart of Vail – Vail Village and Lionshead more similar in regards to architecture and landscaping.

The cost to update the Vail area is costing about $500 million, and all of the combined projects have an estimated completion date of sometime in 2008. Once complete, it is hoped that Vail will be one of the “premier” ski resort town in the world.

There is a website, “New Vail.com” which describes the construction in full detail, and provides maps and drawings of what the town will look like once all of the construction is complete. Information included on the website covers changes to Vail Village and Lionshead, and also talks about the area’s developer, Vail Resorts Development Company.
