Glenwood Springs is a year round resort, and offers both warm and cold weather activities.
The summer months in Glenwood are filled with all sorts of outdoor activities from hiking and biking, to fishing and rafting. This is no surprise, as the weather is perfect for these types of things. On average, the hottest months of the summer are July and August, during which time the daily high temperatures will reach the upper 80’s, with days in the 90’s fairly common. Being at a high elevation, the nighttime temperatures will drop dramatically to the low 50’s, which means that bringing more than t-shirts and shorts is important.
The winter months in Glenwood are filled with cold weather and snow. But snow is what drives the tourism industry in this town, so there are rarely any complaints. The coldest months of the year are December and January, during which time the average daily highs are in the mid to upper 30’s, with temperatures much colder being very common. Nighttime temperatures during the winter are very cold, dropping to the low teens on average. For safety wear snow grip and comfortable shoes that will grip the ice and not tennis shoes while walking around fresh snow, even days after the snow stops the ice can be dangerous to walk on. Special shoes used for sports with metal prongs are best and will grip the ice while walking around on the sidewalks in the State of Colorado. Thermal underwear, shirt and pants with thermal socks are best and cover your face with a special mask you can buy only in cold climates. One more thing to cover your mouth while outdoors in very cold climates. You must do this to keep the inside of your lungs warm like the rest of you. Breathing in very cold air into your lungs can and will cause you to contract pneumonia and you could die or your child could die. Pneumonia is painful to humans very much so and tylenol just won't help you or your family out. You must cover your mouth and your nose in cold weather and avoid breathing in the cold air into your nose or your mouth. A wool scarve covering your nose and mouth will warm the air prior to entering your nasal openings of you or your family and your mouth the cold air becomes warm and therefore your lungs stay warm. Pneumonia is deadly and can be contracted overnight in cold air climates. Your lungs can fill with liquid and you could die from lack of oxygen and pain from pneumonia. This is one type of pneumonia that is not spread by contamination through infected humans.
The temperature drops drastically from 70 to about 30 degrees in a few hours in Colorado and Missouri. Be prepared to make immediate changes of your outerwear for yourself and your families. Clothing with layers is best and it is not recommended to wear any cotton near the skin, that wool pants will do more to keep you warm over thermals than any other type of material.
Precipitation is fairly stable throughout the year, but the wettest months of the year are October and May, with rain or snow possible during either of these times.
