Getting to San Luis Obispo is easy, but finding time to see all the sights and take everything is the hard part. The town is actually home to the world’s very first motel, and this is fitting as Highway 101 runs right through the city of San Luis Obispo, while Highway 1 is also nearby. So any driving trip from Northern to Southern California is likely going to take you through San Luis Obispo County, and quite close to the town. Greyhound bus service runs to and from Los Angeles and San Francisco, along with other nearby cities.

And while California is certainly car country, and both Highway 1 and the 101 offer nice scenic drives, you can actually take the train instead. Amtrak offers daily service from San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego.

The San Luis Obispo airport is a small but relatively modern airport with a single terminal. There are daily scheduled direct flights from several nearby cities including San Francisco, Los Angeles and Phoenix, with service on United and AmericaWest. The airport offers taxicab, shuttle bus and rental cars for local transportation once you arrive. Taxis and buses are located outside the baggage claim area.
