Lots to Love in Ojai

Ojai is a lovely town, very pedestrian friendly (but with ample free parking) for strolling and shopping. Rains Department Store on Main Street is full of good quality merchandise, hardware, home furnishings, shoes, clothing etc. It's the kind of local department store that's saddly disappearing across the country, so it's quite a surprise to find.

The best craft gallery in "the Arches" is, hands down, Human Arts, a craft gallery. You'll find a wide range of prices here for hand-made items, ranging from measuring spoons to sculpture. Two galleries have been consolidated--the downturn in the economy perhaps--but they fit well together. One "side" is craftsman jewelry and wearable art, glassware and sculpture; while the other side features ceramics, figurines, furniture, mirrors, prints, and giftware. This is one a perfect place to shop for wedding presents for close friends--since nothing here is "cookie cutter." The jewelry is made by top artists from across the country and there's something for every taste in the collection.

Main street is probably more for women shoppers, than men--with the exception perhaps of Rains--but there are plenty of cafes and art galleries  to browse.
