BART is a rapid transit system serving Oakland and the entire Bay Area. BART operates on elevated tracks and as a subway throughout Oakland and has 8 stations--12th Street/Oakland City Center, 19th Street/Oakland, Coliseum/Oakland Airport, Fruitvale, Lake Merritt, MacArthur, Rockridge, and West Oakland. BART offers convenient train service to many regional destinations, such as Union Square in San Francisco, as well as service to both local airports (Oakland and San Francisco).

Daily service to Oakland is provided by all 5 lines in the system, connecting to Richmond (green and orange lines), Fremont (orange and red lines), Pittsburg/Bay Point (yellow line), Dublin/Pleasanton (blue line), San Francisco/Daly City (blue, green, red, and yellow lines), Millbrae (blue or red line, depending on day of travel), and SFO (yellow line).

BART fares vary by distance traveled, and unlike any other public transit service within California, there are no easily obtainable discounts available to seniors, the disabled, or children. BART does offer transfer discounts for passengers wishing to connect with various bus routes throughout the Bay Area, but the discount often is a mere 25¢.

AC Transit is the primary bus operator within Oakland and the East Bay area. Most routes converge in downtown, with daily bus connections here to: Amtrak's Jack London Square station (Routes 72 and 72M, and 58L), downtown Berkeley (Route 18), the Greyhound bus depot (Routes 18, 72, and 72M), Jack London Square (Routes 72, 72M, and 72R), Lake Merritt (Routes 12, BA, and NL), Piedmont Avenue (Route 12), Rockridge (Route 51A), downtown San Francisco (Routes BA and NL), and UC Berkeley (Routes 1 and 1R). Routes 72, 72M, and 72R also connect with ferries to San Francisco (year-round) and Angel Island (April-October) at Jack London Square.

Elsewhere within Oakland, frequent daily bus service is available to Oakland International Airport on Route 73, which boards at the Coliseum/Oakland Airport BART Station.

AC Transit provides extensive peak period bus service to/from San Francisco on weekdays in addition to Route NL.  Routes BA and C are most likely to be of interest to visitors, but several others pick up at various points throughout the city and take passengers to San Francisco. Most service is to San Francisco in the morning, returning to Oakland in the afternoon and early evening hours.

Bus fares are $2.10 for adults for one ride or $5 for a daily pass. Transbay buses to/from San Francisco cost $4.00 and include one free transfer. Seniors, the disabled, and older children receive discounted fares, and young children are free. No transfers to BART are available. Transfers from BART provide a 25¢ discount.

Oakland has a ferry terminal at Jack London Square. The Alameda/Oakland Ferry provides daily, year-round service to San Francisco's Ferry Building and Pier 41, as well as the ferry terminal in Alameda. On weekends and holidays between May and October, ferry service also is available to Angel Island. During San Francisco Giants baseball season, ferry service also operates to AT&T Park.

Ferry fares are $6.25 for adults traveling to San Francisco's Ferry Building and Pier 41. The fare is $1.50 to Alameda and $7.25 to AT&T Park. Only roundtrip tickets ($14.50) are available to Angel Island. Additional discounts are available for seniors, the disabled, children, and active military.

Owl Services

Late night and early morning bus service is available on several "All Nighter" routes. Routes 800, 805, and 851 are most likely to be of interest to visitors. Route 800 operates between San Francisco and Oakland, Berkeley, and points north, while the other routes stay within the East Bay. There is no late-night and early morning BART service, so the "All Nighter" routes fill the gap in service. This owl service arrangement is in effect beginning around midnight daily and lasts until approximately 5 AM on weekdays, 6 AM on Saturdays, and 8 AM on Sundays and holidays.
