LA’s nightclub scene, like most other cities, is constant in its change, but some of the better ones do have some shelf life. Hollywood club Mood pairs Zen Buddhism with all-night imbibing while nearby club LAX has morphed into Las Palmas. The Kress is a newly restored modern multi-level entertainment and culinary paradise offering a bar and lounge, restaurant, nightclub and a rooftop lounge revealing 360-degree views of the Hollywood Hills. Level 3, a dance club in the Hollywood & Highland Center has taken sensuality to a new level by decorating its stage with beds and inviting its guest to “lounge.” Meanwhile, further east, Elevate Lounge lets clubbers dance the night away among Downtown LA's tallest skyscrapers, while The Mayan and Conga Room at L.A. LIVE offer salsa, meringue and other Latin-style dance rhythms just about every night.
Downtown’s Standard Rooftop Bar provides a quintessential LA experience, while Windows Bar and Lounge at the Four Seasons Los Angeles at Beverly Hills and the swank Whiskey Blue in the W Los Angeles Westwood are two places that defy every negative stereotype of hotel bars. Clear Lounge in the San Fernando Valley lives up to its moniker with a translucent front door, padded white-leather walls and Plexiglas stools, while Van Nuys' Charlie O’s is a great pine-paneled watering hole. Universal CityWalk offers dueling piano bar Howl at the Moon, and the iconic Hard Rock Cafe. Meanwhile, in downtown, The Edison, The Library Bar, J Restaurant & Lounge and the Seven Grand all serve signature cocktails.
Downtown LA's multi-billion dollar entertainment complex L.A. Live offers concerts at the NOKIA Theatre and the smaller Club NOKIA, while the GRAMMY Museum's soundstage features more intimate concerts. House of Blues on the Sunset Strip regularly presents big-name entertainment, while The Wiltern and El Rey, both legendary LA Art Deco landmarks, present an incredibly diverse array of performances from comedy to alternative to jazz. Finally, Swingers fans can rejoice knowing that there’s always Marty & Elayne at Los Feliz’s Dresden Room as well as Three Clubs in Hollywood.
LA is home to lots of stand-up comedy clubs, including the legendary Laugh Factory, which has served as the launching pad for the careers of famous comedians such as Richard Pryor. On Melrose, The Improv packs in the punch lines as well as the occasional a guest appearance.
In Downtown LA, try Casey’s Irish Pub on Grand Avenue and Grand Avenue Sports Bar in the Millennium Biltmore Hotel for your sports fix. In addition, ESPN Zone and Yard House at L.A. LIVE have both quickly become mainstays in the sports bar scene. Or, for a new twist on an old theme, head to Point Moorea, a tiki-themed sports bar at the Wilshire Grand where a 50s and 60s vibe comes alive. If you’re staying by LAX, Champions Sports Bar in the Los Angeles Airport Marriott, Landings & Bistro in the Hilton Los Angeles Airport Hotel and T.H Brewster’s in the Four Points by Sheraton LAX offer a wide variety of food to go with the big screens.
West Hollywood’s iconic The Abbey offers luxuriously chic fireplaces and cabanas, as well as a list of delicious martinis. Nearby, super hip Here Lounge gets loud on weekends, while The Palms is a no-nonsense lesbian bar. Silver Lake’s Akbar has a Moroccan-themed interior, cushy couches, laid-back vibe and neighborhood atmosphere. Two-steppers can head to Studio City for Oil Can Harry’s, which offers free lessons three times a week. And Mid-City’s Jewel’s Catch One gets a diverse crowd while raising money for its nonprofit medical clinic, the Village Health Foundation.
