Mar del Plata is considered to be one of Argentina’s premier tourist destinations, and with this, it has plenty of sports and activities to offer its visitors.
The city is most famous for hosting the 1978 world cup and the 1995 Pan American Games. The facilties and infrastructure used for these events is still in use today and offers fabulous training facilities for teams and athletes.
Many of the activities available in Mar del Plata have to do with the area’s Beaches and ocean.
Deep Sea Fishing has been a popular activity here for many years. There are many companies offering Charter services in town, two of which are Aquafish and Mako Team. Some of the fish species that are caught include salmon, yellow tail, amberjack, skipjack tuna and shark.
Scuba Diving is another popular sport in Mar del Plata. The diving here is generally good (but not great when compared to the world’s best locations), with decent visibility and opportunities to see lots of marine life. For a list of diving companies throughout all of Argentina (including five within Mar del Plata), check out the Scuba Spots: Argentina page.
Other beach and water sports that are available include surfing, volleyball, and boat sightseeing tours.
A great way to see a wide variety of the local wildlife is by heading to the El Paraíso Zoo , which is located a few minutes outside of town.
Other inland activities available to visitors include biking, hiking, horseback riding, golfing and more.
