JOHANNESBURG, EGOLI, JOZI, CITY OF GOLD - these are some of the fond nicknames the people of Johannesburg have called their city.

The City of Johannesburg was founded in 1886 when gold was discovered on the Witwatersrand and this attracted many men from all over Europe hoping to make their fortune.  The 'city' started off as a mining camp with tents and shacks and moved to bricks and mortar within a decade.

No one is quite sure where the name Johannesburg came from but it seems certain that it was named after a man called Johann which was a common Dutch name in those days.  Ther's a possibility that it was named after Johann Rissik, first clerk in the office of the Surveyor-General or Christiaan Johannes Joubert, Vice-President of the Transvaal Republic.

Today, Johannesburg is a vibrant city, full of vibrant people - many colours, many cultures and many creeds.
