To find out what's going on around town, be sure to pick up a copy of La Nacion on Thursday and read the Tiempo Libre section or  check out the listings in the Tico Times. While obviously, most performances will be in Spanish, even if your language skills are limited to "Hola" and "¿Dónde está el baño?", attending a local performance is a great way to learn more about the culture of the country you are visiting.

In San Jose, you will find a variety of performing arts performances ranging from dance to the dramatic arts.

  • San Jose is home to two dance companies, Compania Nacional de Danza and Taller Nacional de Danza. Throughout the year, the performances by each company range from classical to modern performances.
  • The National Symphony Orchestra plays concerts twice monthly between April and November at the Teatro Nacional (a must-see for those interested in baroque architecture in and of itself.)
  • The National Lyric Opera Company also performs at the Teatro Nacional and at the Teatro Popular Melico Salazar.
