With the amount of construction due to revitalization projects in the downtown area, parking can be quite problematic. One solution to this problem is to be sure to stop off at the Montgomery Area Visitor Center at Union Station (300 Water Street). Here you can pick up a free parking pass that entitles you to parking in front of the Alabama State capitol on Dexter Avenue.

Two other options for getting around town include taking a ride on the bus. The Montgomery Area Transit System offers bus service to destinations all across the city and outlying areas. Within the downtown proper, you can take a ride on the Lightning Route Trolley . The original Lightning Route trolley was the first electric trolley system in the United States when it was built in 1886. Nowadays, the wires and rails have been lost, and the trolley system travels on the roadways with other vehicles.
