• In 1571 AD Emperor Akbar permitted nine Potuguese traders to construct a port on the River Hooghly (Ganga).
  • The port was constructed at Bandel in 1579 AD
  • A wooden church was built in 1599 AD. However it burnt down.
  • A new elegant church, of brick and mortar, was built in 1660, by Gomez de Soto
  • A ship in trouble on the River Hooghly during a NorWester (storm), sank. Its mast is kept in the church compound.
  • The church is well maintained and visited by millions every year.
  • It is the oldest church in West Bengal, and the second oldest in India, the oldest being St. Francis Church in Kerala.
