Chitre is a city whose people enjoy culture and traditions, well known for their hospitality and young spirit. Chitre moto is "donde nadie es forastero (where no one is a foreigner). Major festivities are: Carnavales, where you enjoy four days and four nights of dancing, "mojaderas" during the day (everybody gets wet if you are participating in the dances mostly in the streets) and dances in the evening, you can choose between modern dances and "pindin" (traditional music/like country music in the States); Semana Santa (or Holly Week) celebrating processions in the evening representing the stages of life of Jesus until his death and resurrection; San Juan the Baptist, the patron saint of Chitre, celebrated with horse backriding, music, dances, diablicos sucios (dirty devils) dances, and many other traditional dances where the dancers wear customes; and the district of Chitre foundation, a huge celebration with a day having a civic parade with most of the Nation's schools, businesses, and govermental office participation and another day having a float parade. Also, the patriotic festivities, which are celebrated in Panama nationwide, are widely celebrated in Chitre, having a major celebration on November 9 (Chitre played a major role on the indepence of Panama from Colombia according to history).
On regular days, you can visit the museum, the zoo, and enjoy the Panamanian food, go shopping, visit the national park Sarigua.
