What does Khao Lak mean in Thai?

Khao = mountain; Lak = stick or pole

The commercial centre of khao Lak is about an hour to the north of Phuket airport and straddles the coast road close to Nan Thong Beach. The resort is backed by rain forest covered hills with Khao Sok National Park - waterfalls, nature trekking, rafting etc. - stretching inland and to the north. 

It is known as the closest point to the popular dive destination of the Similans - nine unpopulated islands 60km out into the Andaman Sea. 

There are many uncrowded beaches of pale sand where you can stroll and look for shells or try and spot other tourists!

The locals are friendly and shopping and dining out are cheap and enjoyable. It all sounds pretty good as long as you're not looking for Patong style nightlife.
