People-watchers are in prime location for practicing their sport in Ann Arbor. Filled with yuppies, hippies, intellectuals, and jocks, Ann Arbor is filled with interesting characters. The best places to people-watch are outdoor dining at one of the restaurants or coffee shops on E. University, State Street, or Main Street. Some favorites include Rendevous Cafe, which attracts equal parts students, degenerates, and young professionals, and is a popular hangout for smokers, since the upstairs is one of the few cafes that allows smoking indoors. Another great people watching place is Cafe Felix on Main Street, right in the middle of Main Street Action. This cafe serves espresso drinks, baguettes, croissants, light sandwiches, soups, and pastries, in addition to tapas-like dishes for dinner. Cafe Felix is a great place to take a Valentine, and usually is not that busy. Conor O'Neils, Main Street's Irish pub, also has outdoor patio seating in the summer, and is a better choice for twenty-somethings trying to get away from the college student club scene. People-watchers, of course, cannot miss an hour or two hanging out on the Diag, which is in the center of University of Michigan's Central Campus, and is especially entertaining in the middle of the night with drunk commuters, bums, and student organizations camping out or enduring some sort of endurance activity for charity, pledging, or just because.
