During recoded history in ancient times, living in this area were predominantly the Illyrians, with Celts, Greeks and Romans also occupying the land.
In 1102, the current Hungarian Monarch oversaw the joining of Croatia and Hungary. The Croats living in the area of Croatia desired to be independent, and at times tried to choose leaders without the direct consent of the current Hungary Monarch.
Croatia remained under Hungary rule until 1526, when the majority of the land was overtaken by the Turks. However the next year, the Croatian leaders agreed to become an outpost and be controlled by the Hapsburgs, to avoid being controlled by Turkish rule.
By the year of 1867, much had changed in the area, and Croatia along with Slovenia united to become a crown land of Hungary.
In 1918 a Kingdom was formed between the Croats, Serbs, and Slovenes. This was as a result of the breakup of Austria-Hungary.
Throughout the next 60 years, Croatia was controlled by many different countries and rulers.
Eventually, on June 25, 1991, Croatia declared its long awaited independence, but troubled times in the area did not end with this.
Croatia is set to become the 28th EU member country on 1st July, 2013.
